There are 3 Guild Wars games and one expansion pack. Each of the games is completely stand-alone, but they link up and provide bonuses if you have more than one.
Guild Wars: Prophecies (or just Guild wars) - This is the first game of the series. It has a european/traditional fantasy theme. It also has the longest story-line of any of the games and as a consequence the slowest leveling. Unlike the other games, however, you can quest for many of your skills instead of having to buy them. This is the best Guild Wars to start with if you are new to MMORPGS or not very skilled with them.
Guild Wars: Factions - Has an Asian fantasy theme. Very pretty graphics. This game focuses a lot on player-versus -player combat. This is the shortest of the three main story lines.
Guild Wars: Nightfall - Has a Middle Easter fantasy theme. The middle of the three as far as story length goes, but might be the fastest to get you to the level cap. Weapons are more customizable in this game than any of the others. Also has Heroes, which are superiorcomputer-controled henchmen you can use when you want to play alone or can't find enough people to fill a party.
Guild Wars: Eyes of the North - An expansion pack, you must own another Guild Wars to access its content. Links all three main games together, a prelude to the upcoming Guild Wars 2. Titles earned from this game do more than any other game. It also provides heroes, even to people who don't have Nightfall.
Buy the game you like the best. OR you can buy collections of the games. Recently they have released a trilogy pack that has all three campaigns. What version of the game guild wars is the most fun? Original, Nightfall, Factions, Eye of the north-expansion?
My personal feeling is that all three are equally good, with differences in story and 'feel'. The original Guild Wars, "Prophecies" has a traditional European/Medieval feel similar to an old 'Dungeons and Dragons' sort of setting. I recommend this chapter as the one to do as a new player, as it has the best tutorial/learning section.
The 2nd chapter "Factions" has an Oriental/Chinese sort of feel, and the game backdrops are in many cases really outstanding. From a visual perspective, this may be the best of the three.
The 3rd chapter "Nightfall" adds the very important 'heroes', which are permanent customizable companions for your characters. However, this adds a high level of complication and additional gold expense that may not be suitable for new players.
The supplement, Eye of the North, requires that at least one other chapter be purchased first, and you need a character of at least level 10 to play in the setting. It is most suited for experienced Guild Wars players. What version of the game guild wars is the most fun? Original, Nightfall, Factions, Eye of the north-expansion?
There can be no real answer to this because the first three games are all interconnected and the final one is an expansion. If you are asking however, which ones provide the most synergy (min 2) then I would have to say original and factions. Factions give you AB battles and alliance access while original gives you a lot of basic skills you will need. Nightfall and EotN are both mainly skill adders.
